You will be advised of the scale prior to attending. If you would like to make an appointment please contact our office on (028) 9065 0060 and our reception staff will be happy to help you.

Some commonly asked questions

What type of therapy is CBT?

CBT is usually short-term, straight forward and 'user friendly'. It has been demonstrated in many empirical studies to be effective with common client difficulties, and it is now recommended by the Department of Health.

Before you come along to your first therapy session you will be asked to write a brief list of all the things which are worrying you. This is known as a 'Problem List'. Then you and your therapist will be clear about what you both need to work on from the outset.

You will be taught simple skills which enable you to understand why the difficulties arose, and what to do if they recur.

BCTC Therapists undertake monthly supervision of client work with external clinical psychologists.

What about confidentiality?

BCTC staff follow a strict professional code of ethics. The only circumstances where client confidentiality may be breached are where there is a risk to you e.g. suicide, or a risk to another person e.g. serious assault. More rarely, the therapist may be required to comply with serious criminal proceedings e.g. fraud.

If your GP has referred you for therapy, we may, subject to your agreement, forward brief case closure information, which you will see beforehand.

What about client records?

Therapists are legally required to maintain client records, for a period of five years. BCTC, will hold your records in a strictly confidential place. After the 5-year period the records will be destroyed. You have a right to see your records at any time, although we will need to charge an administration fee.

How will you know if I am happy with my therapy?

At BCTC we are keen to maintain the highest possible standard of therapy. To help us do this we ask all clients to complete a simple, one page 'User Satisfaction Questionnaire' after their final session.

What if I need to make a complaint?

BCTC has never had a client complaint, but people who come to therapy should be treated with respect and empathy, and therefore a complaint would be taken very seriously. If you are unhappy with anything please ask to speak to Anne Kelly, who is the Director of BCTC. (Tel: 028 9065 0060). Anne will try to deal with your complaint as helpfully as possible, and usually within two months.

If you feel your concern has not been fully addressed by Anne, you may also write to BCTC's professional association:
